The young teenagers always follow their daddy’s footsteps and end up eating too much unhealthy food which give rise to accumulation of fatty molecules.

How To Help Kids To Exercise

Posted on by Biswanath Dey

There are people all over the world that are constantly wondering how they can get the new generation of kids to do more exercise. This is a questions that keeps coming up in the minds of concerned parents all over the world.

So to combat this issue I’m going to answer some of the most common questions that parents have and then conclude with some of my own personal recommendations (that I used with my kids on a day to day basis) on how to get your kids to exercise more.

But before we get into that, I think it is really important that we actually take the time to cover and understand the terrible situation that our children are currently facing. The reality is that children these days are not nearly as active as previous generations were. In fact they are more sedentary and lazy than ever before in history.

But if we go back to the 1960’s, then we can see that the situation was completely different. Almost 50% of children would walk or bike it to school every day of the school year. If we compare that to today’s figure of just 9% we can see this downward trend is just appalling.

Just look about you right now, if you have any doubts because it is obvious that most children would rather be indoors playing video games or watching television, than be outside playing and having fun.

The sad thing is that this trend usually continues on for the rest of the child’s life. With lazy kids becoming lazy adults, and active kids becoming active adults.

However if you have young children then all hope isn’t lost because you as a parent have the ability to change things. You can actually push your child by encouraging their innate desire to be active. This really is all that it takes to get your kids to be a lot more active. But the thing is that you must get started now!

Now you have a better understanding of the bad situation that our children are presented with today we can move onto answering some common queries about children and exercise.

So Will Weight Lifting Result In My Child Stunting Their Own Growth?

Yes, I’m pretty sure that you’ve already heard of the so called factual statement that any child who does lift weights will stunt their own growth.

But if we stop taking these assumptions for facts for a second, and actually try to find some evidence to prove it we will come to find that there isn’t a single piece of scientific research which proves that weight training has ever resulted in a child stunting their own growth.

However there is plenty of research which suggests that the children who do lift weights from a young age will grow up to actually have stronger bone density, stronger and healthier physiques and overall they will be in a lot better health than those kids that don’t lift weights.

So believe me if your child is lifting weights under your supervision in a controlled environment, then there is no risk of them actually causing themselves any sort of injury. The only time your child can cause serious damage to themselves is, if they are left unsupervised and they attempt to lift weights that are way out of their capabilities.

So Will My Child Benefit From Being Placed In a Structured Fitness Program?

There is no definitive answer to this question because it all depends on the child in question.

If you happen to be blessed with a child that loves to move about and stay active at all times then you really won’t benefit much from putting him into a fitness regimen.

The only time that a structured fitness regimen will become necessary is when you have a child who would rather not be active and instead just sit down in one place and do very little.

Personal Guidelines To Get Your Children Fit

Children Exercise

These are the exact steps that I employ to help my children become healthy and strong human beings who love to be physically active all the time.

Make Play The Basis

You really need to do whatever you can to make play the basis for the exercise that your kid does from now. In more cases than not, play is usually active and more importantly it is going to be fun for your kid.

All you really need to do is encourage your kid to get out into the world and actually move about and do what they are naturally designed to do. The more they do this the more they are going to love being physically active which will continue on with them for the rest of their lives.

Climbing Different Stuff

Whatever there is out there that can be climbed safely you need to encourage your kid to climb it. Trees, pull up bars, ropes, fences, whatever it may be just push your kid to climb it. The more they climb things from a young age, the stronger they will become. This will continue on well into their adulthood which is exactly what we want here.

Jumping On and Off Different Stuff

The truth is that children all over the world have the tendency to fall down a lot. You should not stop them from having fun just because they are more prone to causing themselves minor injury. Instead you should focus on helping them by teaching them what the best way to fall down is to prevent injury.

This will give you the peace of mind that they are much safer and you will find that with that knowledge they will hurt themselves a lot less often.

At the end of the day you just need to push your child from a young age to be as active as they possibly can. Help them by showing them a variety of different things they can participate in to get more active. Believe me once you plant this desire of exercise into their mind nothing will be able to take it away from them!

That truly is the best gift that you are ever going to be able to give to your child!

What Causes Childhood Obesity Epidemic

What Causes Childhood Obesity Epidemic

Posted on by Biswanath Dey

Childhood obesity is becoming a serious problem throughout the world. The number of overweight children in the United States has more than tripled in the past 30 years. Childhood obesity is widespread in other countries around the globe as well. Unfortunately, this is an epidemic that many people still don’t want to accept. Adults should understand what causes obesity and how they can prevent it.

Many educational and government institutions around the world including the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) and the United Kingdom’s Department of Health have conducted a number of studies to better understand the causes of childhood obesity.

Why is Childhood Obesity on the Rise?

Childhood Obesity Epidemic

There are a variety of reasons for childhood obesity. They typically boil down to poor dietary habits and a lack of physical activity. In order to treat the problem, we need to define these causes more specifically. Here is a list of some of the leading causes of this epidemic.

Parents Are Busier

Parents are their children’s first socializing agents. The dietary habits they set for their children play a huge role in their children’s lifestyles.

Parents are working longer hours and trying to juggle more things at a time. They often don’t have time to cook a nutritious meal for their families. Instead they turn to takeout and fast food.

Children grow up eating foods are very likely to gain weight. According to a study by the New York City’s Chronic Disease and Prevention Bureau, the average meal at a fast food restaurant had more nearly 1,000 calories in it. Of course, children’s meals were smaller portioned and had a smaller amount of calories, but they have been found to be equally unbalanced in terms of what children should be eating.

Many parents lack a basic understanding of nutrition themselves. Adult obesity rates continue to climb, which suggests parents are more likely to set bad standards for their children as well. Parents need to be more diligent about encouraging their children to eat healthily if they intend to be part of the solution to the childhood obesity problem.

Society Dependent on Electronics

Children in the 21st century are spending a lot more time with electronics. A study published in Obesity Research states that video games are partially responsible for the increase in childhood obesity. The study was conducted in Switzerland and found that foreign citizens were twice as likely to be obese as non-Swiss children.

The study’s authors noted that Swiss children didn’t spend nearly as much time on the television or playing video games. They suspected there may be a correlation, which led them to conduct a follow-up study. The authors noted a strong link between obesity and the amount of time children spend with electronics.

This study was conducted in 2004. Facebook and other media have since taken up a considerable amount of time in many children’s lives. These children are less likely to be physically active, which increases their odds of becoming overweight.

Decline in Physical Activity

According to a study by researchers at the University of California at San Diego, the amount of time children have spent exercising has dropped sharply over the past 20 years. The study tracked children form the age of 9 to 15. By the end of the study, less than a third of them met the benchmark goal for exercising.

Encouraging children to exercise regularly is one of the obvious solutions to the obesity problem. They need encouragement from their peers, parents and teachers to become more active.

Changes in School Menus

School cafeteria food has always had a bad rap among students. However, school lunches have only recently been studied by nutrition groups. Many schools have offered pizzas, chicken nuggets and other foods with large amounts of fat and low nutritional value.

The Obama Administration has recognized the role that options in the school cafeteria play in childhood obesity. At the beginning of 2012, the Obama Administration has launched a new bill that will reform the standards on what types of foods schools will offer to their children.

Ending the Childhood Obesity Epidemic

The childhood obesity epidemic is becoming more serious. Children who are overweight are at a much greater chance of developing diabetes, heart disease and a number of other health related issues. New measures will need to be taken by parents, Congress, schools and other agents to facilitate the change needed to nip the childhood obesity problem in the bud.

5 WAYS TO REDUCE CHILDHOOD OBESITY

5 Ways To Reduce Childhood Obesity

Posted on by Biswanath Dey

When it comes to children, it’s better to use the word ‘overweight’ rather than ‘obese’ as children are more sensitive to the stigma of obesity. It is mostly difficult to draw a line between overweight and normal weight among children. Therefore mostly the BMI (Body Mass Index) of the child is taken as a reference to decide upon it. The condition where a child’s (between 2 and 18 years of age) BMI is greater than that of most other children of same age, gender and region is called childhood obesity

Childhood obesity should seldom be neglected as a trivial issue as it induces few of the most serious health disorders in children. Physical/ bodily effects include early diabetes, high blood pressure, cardio vascular problems, higher risks of cancer, eating and sleeping problems etc. are a few to mention. Also the psychological impact of it is highest among kids resulting in boredom, frustration in mind and even depression.

If you have a child or know a child that is struggling with early obesity, or you suspect your child may be at risk for becoming obese, follow these 5 easy tips to lead the child on the path to a healthier, happier and longer life without obesity.

CHILDHOOD OBESITY

Do As You Say

If you’re encouraging the child in your life to make healthy eating choices, then it’s especially important for you as an adult to set the best example that you can for your child and make those same healthy choices yourself.

Cook family dinners that are healthy and contain the right balances of food groups for both you and your child, keeping in mind that your child is watching how you eat and will likely mimic your choices. Don’t ever snack on junk food in front of your child – they will think that it is OK to do the same thing as often as they want, which could easily lead to childhood obesity problems.

There are different approaches through which obesity in children can be minimized. One approach which is recommended is to stop the child from putting on more weight. Also to compensate the already accumulated weight towards the natural growth of the child. Though this approach takes a longer time, it is more favorable to the kid as they won’t start feeling it as a curse or punishment or burden.

Serve Breakfast

Children who eat a healthy, balanced breakfast are more likely to maintain healthy weights than those who either skip breakfast or eat sugary cereals or toaster pastries before heading off to school.

Prepare a breakfast that contains protein (eggs), fruits (any fruit is OK here) and a healthy amount of carbs (whole wheat bread as toast). The breakfast will keep your child full throughout the day while also starting them off on the right foot when it comes to balanced meals for the day.

Start with the basics of fine tuning your child’s food habits. Because it may not be how much is eaten, but what is eaten. Avoid junk, snack and packed café food items like burgers, pizzas etc. Instead go for more nutritious and natural food like green leafy vegetables, fresh fruits, egg, fish etc. Make sure it tastes good for your child

Not only children, but even adults should cultivate the habit of drinking lots and lots of water. This not only revitalizes and keeps the energy at high levels but also helps in burning off the excess fat without feeling tired.

Limit Sugary Drinks

The problem is many kids is that they love juices and sodas, but these beverages are loaded with sugars and “liquid calories.” These kinds of drinks can really pack on the calories for a child – a typical juice box contains around 150 calories, and if your child is consuming 3 or 4 of these in a day, those calories can really start to add up on such little bodies!

Encourage your child to drink water, and lots of it! Our bodies are comprised, after all, of 70% water, and in an active child, it’s more important than ever to replace that liquid nutrient. Make water available at all times and encourage your child to drink it frequently throughout the day.

Encourage Exercise

Half of the problem with childhood obesity in America unfortunately seems to stem from the fact that kids these days get off the school bus and come home and plop themselves on the couch in front of the television or their video game consoles. What happened to the good ‘ole days of riding bikes with the other neighborhood kids after school and playing tag in the vacant lot down the street with a group of neighbors?

Your kids health and fitness factors includes good routine along with a minimum amount of regular physical work. Encourage outdoor games and sports instead of video/ computer games. Regular walk or a jog is advisable preferably early in the mornings. They are kids, after all, and they should be encouraged to run around and expend all of that excess energy they so easily store. If there aren’t any other kids in the neighborhood or they are different ages, hop on a bike with your child and go for a ride before dinner.

Demonstrate to Educate

Kids love to help out in the kitchen when they’re allowed to – it’s something new and interesting to them and they get to experiment with different combinations of food to see what they like. So make mealtime fun for your kids while also teaching them the importance of a healthy and balanced diet by letting them help you prepare a meal in the kitchen.

Let your kids get hands-on every step of the way (be careful, of course, around the oven and the stove top) and make sure they understand why you’re doing things like cooking vegetables to go with the steak that’s in the oven, or chopping a salad to pair with the whole wheat pasta dish that’s on the stove. The more you can educate your children on making healthier meal choices, the more likely they will be to make those same choices for themselves in the future.

OBESITY AMONG CHILDREN HOW TO PREVENT IT

Obesity Among Children How To Prevent It

Posted on by Biswanath Dey

Obesity among children has become an important issue nowadays. Necessary action should be taken immediately so as to stop gaining weight. While there are currently one million obese children under the age of 16, if the current trend is not reversed 9 in 10 children will be overweight or obese by 2050.

The implications of childhood obesity

Being overweight can contribute to a number of illnesses, and obesity in childhood is even worse because the damage starts getting done from an early age. We have already seen an increase in childhood type 2 diabetes, which can reduce your life expectancy by about 10 years. In the future it is thought that heart disease, osteoarthritis and some cancers will also be on the increase as a result of childhood obesity. It is estimated that the health problems arising as a result of an increasingly obese population will cost the NHS and wider economy £50 billion by 2050. Furthermore, despite the growing number of overweight children, they can still be targeted and picked on as outsiders, which can have devastating consequences on their self-esteem.

Preventing childhood obesity

There are plenty of ways that parents can work with their children to help prevent them becoming overweight. Parents must provide their children with a healthy diet that is low in fat and sugar. This doesn’t mean totally eliminating treats, but it does mean recognising that giving into your child’s demands can do them harm in the long run.

Schools have recently began providing healthier options, but parents should feel comfortable finding out what their child’s school is dishing out and putting pressure on schools to improve their menus if necessary.

As well as a good diet, it’s important that children get enough physical exercise. Again, schools can play a part with PE lessons, but some schools offer as little as two hours a week. If your child would rather spend their afternoons and weekends watching television or playing video games it’s up to you to try and encourage them to find a more active hobby.

It’s a common misconception that if a young boy doesn’t like football he must just be quite lazy, but often it’s the sport itself that isn’t liked. There are plenty of activities for kids to do whether it’s judo or badminton, so it’s important that parents don’t give up if their first few ideas don’t go down well with their child.

It can at times be difficult to make children do things they don’t want – such as eating healthily or doing physical exercise. This is why it’s essential that you explain to them in an appropriate way about the importance of a healthy lifestyle and how it will impact their future.

Losing weight means to lose more calories either by consuming low calorie foods or exercise more to burn the extra calories that have been consumed. Children are more prone to eat good and tasty foods without considering the effects but it rest on the parents to target the children’s eating habits and help them to visit gymnasiums and yoga class on regular basis.

However, if a child during his infancy is introduced solid foods afterward, it will prevent the child from getting obese. And in early childhood, children should be forced to eat healthy, low-fat snacks and some healthy exercises along with other outside playful activities should be highly encouraged. Eating meals while sitting in front of television should be discouraged. In these cases, the parents need to be more supportive so as to see they do not hurt their children’s feeling indirectly.

Instead of criticizing they should encourage their children to eat right food and do health exercises. Children who are obese should go to a consultant who can advise them about their required nutritious food. They should always try to be sensitive to the children’ social relationships and help them to cope up with the environment.

The diet should contain foods made of whole grains, fruits and vegetables, pasta, brown bread and rice. Non-fat dairy products like frozen yogurt, low fat yogurt or cheese and fruit juice are always a good choice. While non-vegetarian items like lean meat, poultry, fish, eggs are good choice. Snacks in between meals are suggested by experts.

What should you do if your child is already Overweight

Parents concerned about their child’s weight may want to get tailored advice from their doctor, but generally treatment and prevention methods are similar.

Providing a healthy diet to your child while encouraging them to lead a more active lifestyle should hopefully allow them to begin losing weight at a sensible pace.
